In April 2019 together with two other human rights groups Voice Up Japan x Voice Up Japan ICU started a petition to push for a legal reform of the law regarding sexual violence in Japan. The petition since has gathered around 100.000 signs and we presented it to the Minister of Justice at the end of March 2020.
We also held a press conference in November 2019 which gathered national and international attention. At the press conference we spoke up about sexual harassment of job-seeking students in Japan. Voicing up for victims of sexual harassment at the press conference triggered a huge dialogue on Twitter and many victims finally had the courage to speak up about their stories.
Periodically we hold events to create safe spaces for people to discuss about gender equality. We also organise protests, hold lectures and lobby politicians and researchers.
"Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive.
Both men and women should feel free to be strong."
Four Pillars of Activism
Voice Up Japan ICU holds educational seminars and events about gender problems in Japan and on how each of us can make a change.
Through petitions, protests and events, as feminist activists in Japan, we aim to open a dialogue about gender inequality and feminism in Japan.
We lobby politicians, and lawmakers to raise awareness about urgent gender issues like sexual harassment or sexual violence law reform.
By holding regular events at International Christian University, we aim to build safe spaces for people to speak up and discuss their opinions.
